Research the features of a storyboard.
Description: Image result for example of perfect storyboardA storyboard is a visual representation of a collection of images which make up a story, episode, music video or even digital games. A storyboard consists of images, dialogue and or text and even details linking to cinematography lighting and sound. They help to bring a production of any sort together, helping with timing as well. A storyboard helps the crew on set to understand the focus of each scene so it is polished and clean.
Features of a storyboard include:

·         The Production Name – a storyboard includes a name so the crew on the production know they are working on the right production.

·         Scene numbers – scene numbers are needed to help the crew understand what scene is being done. They help to arrange the scenes in a chronological order to save time on set.

·         Pictures- pictures are used in a storyboard so the director knows what’s going on in a scene, it helps them to understand if the visual image is right for the scene or not. It also helps the crew to understand the setting.

·         Text- texts may include dialogue which helps the cast members to understand what they as saying (also included in scripts). Camera angles movements and shots may also be present to help the crew members on camera to know what they are doing when shooting a scene. Texts may include sound also so people on sound know what sort of sound may need to be played or the level of sound needed for the scene etc.

·         Narration and audio- this includes all sound in the production. Audio and narration help with animation storyboards so the creator gets a good idea of how the scene will sound.

Different Types of storyboards.

Movie storyboards
A movie production storyboard typically consists of visual images in a chronological order. They do not normally consist of text as a script will contain most of the dialogue, camera angles shots movements, and sound effects. These visual images help to understand what’s going on when.
Digital games storyboard
Digital game production storyboards consist of many images to put together a whole game. They may also include directions as to how to play and in game directions. A digital storyboard is very complex because they are hard to put together when including everything that’s featured for this type of storyboard.
Music video storyboards
A music video productions storyboard consists of visual images shot durations and sounds (featured track). Music video storyboards consist of all of this because it helps with timing the levels of sound needed per shot and the sounds featured in that particular scene. Normally a music video would also include and introduction which may include different sounds and shot duration making it all really important and reliable when making a music video production.
Animation storyboards – animation storyboards can consist of everything including shot transitions featured sounds and visual images. An animation storyboard is very detailed as it can all be done on computer or by hand   (normally computer).

All storyboards really have a similar layout, visual images in boxes which may or may not include some sort of text in the making. However the way they are made may be different from one another based on the type of storyboard being made we have our tradition storyboard like movie storyboards, whereas they may or may not be rushed if so they are they are thumbnail storyboards which are rushed. Animatic storyboards are for digital games and animations as they are done normally on a computer as the style is very different. Digitmatics are like animatic however they are numbers, not letters, these are also used in digital games as coding is needed to put together a rough idea.

LESSON 1 - WHAT IS SINGLE CAMERA PRODUCTION?

TASK 1

Task 1: Understanding 'single camera production'

a) Define 'single camera production':
single camera production is the use of one camera throughout a whole production.

b) Identify the advantages and disadvantages of single camera production (refer to examples where you can):

Advantages
  • cheaper to film
  • allows easier camera movements
  • more available space
  • easy to film more detailed productions
  • sound and lighting is better controlled.
Disadvantages
  • takes longer to film
  • longer to edit everything off of one camera
  • looks unpolished and sloppy
  • other relating factors in the creation of a production may be effected e.g lighting or cinematography.

c) How does multi-camera differ to single camera productions?
Multi camera production differs from single camera production because multiple cameras are used instead of one. more cameramen/women are needed which is more expensive whereas single camera is only 1 person. single camera is more time consuming whereas multi camera is shorter because more cameras are operating at once. single camera productions does not allow you to catch every angle whereas multi camera allows you to express all angles to give the perfect shot. multi camera productions are more polished and clean on the other hand single camera production can look sloppy.
single camera doesn't allow you to keep a controlled lighting or. sound aesthetic whereas multi camera allows you to keep the consistency throughout.

d) List 3 examples of single camera shows/films (aim for different genres)

1) later doctor who

2) modern family

3) Brooklyn nine nine

List 3 examples of multi-camera shows (aim for different genres)

1) one day at a time

2)two broke girls

3)friends

e) What is the definition of genre? Why is this important for audiences?

genre is the style of production that you watch. this ranges between all production , ( film , tv shows and music videos)film- action , comedy , romance. tv shows- reality series , soap operas , documentaries. music videos - pop , rock , rap. this is important as it states the type of production you are watching and allows you to find productions in that genre category that you like.

Format- the way in which something is laid out and how its been presented.

  • single - a film between 60 and 90 minutes long which has a start middle and end.(saw)
  • serial- one story over a range of several episodes.(13 reasons why)
  • series - use of same cast with different stories over each episode.(Big Bang theory)
  • sequel - one story continued into different seasons or films( the lion king / riverdale)

  • action - weapons , fighting , flash scenes / fast and furious (single/sequel)

  • classic - old things , past references , past trends./ dirty dancing (single)

  • comedy- jokes , comedians , stupid story lines / meet the millers ( single)

  • documentaries- history lessons , constant narrator / our planet (series)

  • horror- scary things , blood , screams , spooky music./ IT (Sequel)

  • sci-fi- aliens , futuristic creations , space./ the 100 (sequel / series )

  • thriller- action , fights , / get out ( single )

  • romance- love , sex./ twilight( collection) (sequel)

  • musicals- dancing , music. the greatest showman ( single )

purpose of a storyboard:

The purpose of a storyboard is to visualise the music video , game , film or TV program in order to plan and layout what will be going on in the making of the these productions. A  story board consists of many images and text to portray what will happen in the making of the productions or present what needs to be changed if it doesn't fit well with the productions future release. The pictures visualise the scene going on and the text below the image represents what may be said , camera movements , angles and shots( cinematography) that may be taken . it could also include changes in scene when it cuts to the next (editing) for example in a music video the image may fade from 1 location to another. etc. these storyboards may include a whole story with hundreds of images and texts (traditional) or a quick rough storyboard giving a rough layout of what may happen (thumbnails). storyboards come in all styles depending on the production that may be making them. film  TV music videos and games all follow different structures , a film would for a traditional storyboard whereas a digital game would go for an animations storyboard(animatics or digimatics).Overall the purpose of a storyboard aside of its different styles is to bring together a production to make sure that its polished , the images help to visualise whats going to happen and and if its good enough and the texts help you to understand different things that are going on in the scene including speech ( scripts but not large ) and camera adjustments to giver you full knowledge of everything going on in the production. the purpose of a storyboard helps everyone on the set so they can also visualise the making of the productions so they can know of what they got to do in order to present clean outcomes. they also save time during the productions as they are less time consuming and good outcomes are achieved.
